On 23rd of April 2010 Captain Klaus Kueper, head of the Briese research department, handed over the first ‘Briese-Award for Marine Research’ to Dr. Stephan A. Klapp in a ceremony held in the Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemuende.
In cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG assigned the ‘Briese-Award for Marine Research’ for the very first time. The award, which from this year on will be assigned annually, honours excellent doctoral studies in the field of marine research with results that are closely related with the operations of research vessels and the application and development of technique and/or data collection at sea.
Dr. Klapp received the award for his doctoral study about natural gas hydrates. Gas hydrates are a challenge for the future; on the one hand they are potential energy-resources, on the other hand they have an influence on the world’s climate. In his study Dr. Klapp was able to work out important comparisons between marine gas hydrates varying in locations.
