In May 2009 the international OCEANS '09 conference and exhibition was held in Bremen, Germany. The world’s leading conference and exhibition in ocean science, engineering, technology and management has been organised for more than 30 years by the Ocean Engineering Society of the IEEE, the world's largest engineers’ association.
The OCEANS addresses scientists, engineers and representatives from authorities and companies, which are active in marine research and technological development. The main topics cover new methods and technologies in ocean exploration.
At the OCEANS ’09 in Bremen a number of lectures and topic sessions provided an overview of the latest technological and scientific approaches in ocean research, including recent issues on basic research and utilisation of natural resources. This programme has been complemented by a variety of professional tutorials: Expert presentations partly accompanied by practical exercises offered the opportunity to gain deeper insight into specific technologies and applications. Also during one of the OCEANS '09 workshops a forum has been given to discuss the future impact of climatic changes on mankind.
More than 900 participants took part in the OCEANS`09 event. As a prelude to the scientific part of the OCEANS conference in Bremen the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi, Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology) organised a highly interesting workshop on deep sea technology, which has shown to the conference delegates that Deep Sea Technology will have a bright future against the background of increasing oil demand.
The OCEANS ’09 was supplemented by an international marine technology exhibition, where leading companies presented their products and services in the Bremen Congress and Exhibition Centre. 100 exhibitors from 14 countries presented latest marine technologies and Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG (Research Department) took part for the first time with a stand at that fair. We were able to collect a lot of information and to discuss with experts from the research scene various topics. Eye-catcher of the Briese stand was the model of the RV “MARIA S. MERIAN”.
